Church Musician

Overview: The musician will serve Union Bethel AME Church by providing musical leadership to at least two choirs that is spiritually grounded, focused and dynamic. The ideal candidate must be skilled in the organ and keyboard. The musician serves in a part-time capacity and reports to the Lead Musician.
Skills and Attributes Required: This position requires a minimum of five (5) years of experience playing both traditional and contemporary music for a church. “The Church Musician must see this position as a ministry to and with the people of God”; and must know the AME order of service, or be willing to learn. The candidate must be able to work well with all staff, volunteers and musicians of all abilities to further the music ministries.
  • Plan, implement and play music for impactful worship services – both regular and seasonal – as well as non-Sunday services and special events. Schedule will be multiple Sundays each month.
  • Coordinate rehearsals, performances, etc. with the Lead Musician.
  • Provide leadership to a team of volunteer musicians in order to provide cohesive worship experiences that usher in the spirit of God.
  • Create a vibrant culture that allows both the choirs and musicians to grow musically and spiritually.
  • Conduct weekly rehearsals with Praise and Worship team.
  • Conduct various musicians such as drummer, bassist, saxophone soloist during worship service.
  • Maintain and build current musical repertoire.
  • Travel with the Pastor to outside engagements, as requested.
  • Attend staff meetings held by the Pastor and ministry team meetings as requested.
  • Serve as a resource to other church ministries as needed.
  • Coordinate leave time with Lead Musician to ensure that each worship service and choir engagement has musical support. Must report and request all leave time 2 weeks prior to taking time off from scheduled services.
  • Communicate concerns involving musical equipment
  • Interact, teach and communicate with people of all ages including, but not limited to youth and young adult choir members (Youth and Young Adult [YAYA] and Praise Ensemble choirs)
  • Support the church’s worship environment through the well - prepared execution of music presented by the choir, praise/worship team and musicians through the appropriate usage of hymns and songs.
  • Prepare for choir and praise/worship team rehearsal times to achieve a high quality music program.
