The Holy Sacrament of Baptism - 2017 to 2018

16smallHymn #280 "O Jesus I Have Promised"
Words:  John Ernest Bode - Tune: William Harold Ferguson
O Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end; be thou forever near me, my Master and my Friend. I shall not fear the battle if Thou art by my side, not wander from the pathway if Thou wilt be my guide.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Baptism is one of the African Methodist Episcopal Church's holy sacraments.  It is one of the most sacred events in your Christian life.  We have established a new procedure for baptisms.

In order for an adult, child, or infant to be baptized, the adult or the parents must attend a "Preparation for Baptism" session with the pastor or his designee.  Baptism is not only a sign of profession and a mark of difference whereby Christians are distinguished from others who are not baptized, but it is also a sign of regeneration or the new birth.

The African Methodist Episcopal Church recognizes the water baptism of infants, children, and adults. If you were baptized prior to joining Union Bethel, we believe the grace of God in the sacrament of water Baptism remains in effect. No ordained clergy person in the A.M.E. Church will re-baptize an infant, child, or adult. We continue to recognize the Sovereignty of God and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in the Holy sacrament of water Baptism as confirmed by Jesus, the Christ.

Please know that the Preparation for Baptism session is a prerequisite for the Sacrament of Baptism.  If you are unable to attend, the baptism will be postponed until you are able to attend.  Baptisms are now held quarterly, per the following schedule for this conference year:

Section II.  The Articles of Religion No. 17  Of Baptism
Baptism is not only a sign of profession, and mark of difference; but it is also a sign of regeneration, or the new birth.  The baptism of young children is to be retained in the Church.
